In January 2024, the Egyptian-American archaeological project at Hermopolis Magna (200 miles south of Cairo) discovered the top half of a colossal statue of Pharaoh Ramses II that matched a base known as early as Napoleon’s expedition to Egypt. Two years later, the statue has been joined. Dr. Basem Gehad, archaeologist and co-director of the Hermopolis Magna project, discusses how to put an over three-thousand-year-old statue back together and explains how the statue and its pair had been reconstructed several times in antiquity.

This lecture focuses on the portent of the newborn centaur in Plutarch’s Symposium of the Seven Sages (149c1-f1). A close reading of this little-known passage sheds new light on Plutarch’s creative engagement with the Greek past and reveals his preoccupation with heredity and succession in this work.

Abstract: Aristophanes’ Lysistrata is a comedy about gender roles in Athenian society in the fifth century BCE. It (comically) reinforces the traditional view that wives are to look after the home and family while their husbands handle matters of politics, economy, and war. But where do older women, past their child-bearing and rearing years, fit in? This talk will demonstrate how the chorus of old women in Lysistrata navigate their gendered society by assuming various animal identities. Through language, they become war dogs, angry wasps, protective mother sows, and vengeful dung-beetles, thereby empowering themselves to traverse gender boundaries and seize authority in both the feminine realm of the oikos (the household) and the masculine realm of the polis (the city).

This lecture explores the origins and development of coinage during the Archaic period. It examines when, where, and why coinage was first introduced, how it was produced, and the ways in which it was used. The earliest coins, made of electrum, appeared in Lydia and lonia in the mid-seventh century BCE. By analyzing early specimens and their find-spots, the lecture will consider the revolutionary nature of this innovation. It will also trace the subsequent introduction of silver and gold coinage by the mid-sixth century BCE and discuss how Athens and other Greek city-states adopted this new medium of exchange.
