CU 91Ҹ’s Hellems Building Reopens after Renovation
On April 10, 2026, theHellems Arts and Sciences building on main campus reopened after a full interior renovation that began in summer 2023. The building’s look includes a new floor plan, sleek modern systems, updated classroom and office spaces, and a new basement theater room. Students and faculty can also enjoy anew café, plenty of study spaces, improved accessibility and air conditioning.
Located in the building’s courtyard, the — home to many productions — also boasts an upgrade.
While the renovation prioritized modern finishes and features, designers took care to preserve the 105-year-old building’s historic charm, reusing about 80% of the roof tiles and refinishing the original wood floors.
“Hellems is more than a building,” said Daryl Maeda, former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “It’s a symbol of CU 91Ҹ’s dedication to the liberal arts as the intellectual heart of the university.”
