Our interdisciplinary research is focused on medical devices, surgical tools, medical mechatronics, surgical robotics, design and control - with a specific emphasis on translation from bench to bedside. These efforts include design of novel surgical tools and devices, characterization and modeling of how these tools and devices interact with the patient, and design and control optimization based on these 91ÃÛÌÒ¸ó.Â
Active research projects are focused on 3D micropatterned material mechanics;Â robotic capsule endoscopy design, intelligence, dynamics, and control; synthetic, distributed sensing, soft and modular tissue (sTISSUE); and an intelligence-driven patient care approach to reduce medical errors (I-CARE).

Professor Rentschler and his laboratory's efforts have been recognized through the Department of Mechanical Engineering's Woodward Outstanding Faculty Award (2014-2015), the College of Engineering and Applied Science Dean's Performance Award for Outstanding Junior Faculty (2016), the 91ÃÛÌÒ¸ó Provost's Faculty Achievement Award (2016), 91ÃÛÌÒ¸ó and Innovation Office Faculty Fellow (2019), the 91ÃÛÌÒ¸ó New Inventor of the Year Award (2009), and the Sylvia Norviel Cancer 91ÃÛÌÒ¸ó Faculty Fellow (2018-present).
