SPAN 4180: Major Works and Trends in 20th and 21st Latin American Literature

Mirrors and Labyrinths: The Worlds of Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel García Márquez

Professor: Peter Elmore

T-TH: 12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m.

The book story collection Ficciones, by Jorge Luis Borges, and Cien años de soledad, by Gabriel García Márquez, are doubtlessly the two most important and influential works ever written in Latin America. The Argentine Borges and the Colombian García Márquez’s must be counted as the very best modern exponents of the fantastic and magical realism, respectively. In this course, we will read closely both Borges’ short stories and García Márquez’s multigenerational saga. We will also place the texts and their creators within the literary and historical contexts in which they emerged.Ìý
